The plastics manufacturing process turns raw products into plastic products used in a wide range of applications across multiple sectors and industries. These include construction, automotive, defence, medical, oil and gas retail, FMCG and many more. Thermoplastic injection moulding involves taking polymer pellets and feeding them into a machine to be heated to high enough temperatures to melt into a liquid. This is then fed into a specially designed mould, and the liquid is allowed to cool into the desired shape. The finished components are then quality tested and sent out to fulfil the customer’s order.
Other forms of plastic manufacturing exist, including plastic extrusion, where plastic pellets are fed into an extrusion machine, heated and then pulled and formed into the right shape. Blow moulding uses air pressure to create hollow plastic in the specified shape. Thermoforming heats previously extruded plastic sheets to stretch it over a mould and then trim it to the correct dimensions and shape.
The preferred plastic moulding or manufacturing method will depend entirely on the type of polymers being used – thermoplastic or thermoset plastic – and the required properties that the finished product will need to suit the intended application. Do careful research into what each polymer and manufacturing method can provide and the advantages and disadvantages.
Check that your shortlisted manufacturing companies have the correct accreditations and trade credentials. For example, If they are members of the British Plastics Federation (BPF) and the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (SEDEX)? They should also demonstrate high-quality processes and attention to detail with plenty of satisfied customers, a strong safety record, and a solid investment in up-to-date, efficient plastic manufacturing equipment.
